Shaker Cabinets
A recessed center panel with a clean, square frame — the most requested cabinet door style in New England kitchens because it works with almost any finish or hardware choice.
Pros
- Timeless, works in traditional and modern kitchens
- Easy to keep clean, minimal detailing to trap dust
- Pairs with almost any hardware style
- Widely available across every brand PoshHaus carries
Considerations
- Less ornamental than raised-panel doors
- Flat surfaces show fingerprints on dark paint finishes
How Shaker Cabinets are actually built
The Shaker door traces back to the furniture-making tradition of the Shaker religious communities in 18th- and 19th-century New England, who built with almost no ornamentation on the belief that beauty came from honest, functional craftsmanship. Two centuries later, that same restraint is exactly why the style hasn't gone out of fashion.
Because a Shaker door is just a flat recessed panel inside a square frame, it carries almost no inherent "style" of its own — paint it and it can look coastal, modern, farmhouse, or transitional depending on the color and hardware you pair with it. That flexibility is the biggest reason it's still the default choice for most kitchens we design.
Construction-wise, Shaker doors are typically five-piece (four frame rails plus a center panel), which means the panel can expand and contract slightly with humidity without the whole door warping — a real advantage over slab doors in older homes without tight climate control.
