Why Shaker Cabinets Are Still the Most Requested Style
Shaker doors have topped kitchen requests for over a decade. Here's why the style keeps working across trends.
Shaker doors have been the single most-requested cabinet style in our showroom for years, and it's not just habit — the style solves a genuinely hard design problem.
What makes it "Shaker"
A true Shaker door is a recessed center panel inside a simple, square frame — no routed detail, no ornamentation. It traces back to Shaker furniture-making traditions that prized function over decoration, and that restraint is exactly why it still works today.
Why it's so versatile
Because the profile is so plain, a Shaker door takes on the personality of whatever's around it. Paint it white with brass hardware and it reads traditional; paint it charcoal with black hardware and it reads modern; leave it in a natural wood stain and it reads transitional. Almost every brand we carry offers some version of it — Cab-Tec alone stocks six Shaker colors, and NorthPoint's Catalina and Hatteras collections are both Shaker-profile doors at different price points.
Practical advantages
Beyond looks, the flat recessed panel is genuinely easier to keep clean than a routed raised-panel door, and its simple lines pair with almost any hardware style without looking mismatched.
When to consider something else
If you want a kitchen with more visual detail and formality, a raised-panel door brings dimension a Shaker profile can't. But for most kitchens, most budgets, and most resale considerations, Shaker remains the safest and most flexible starting point — which is exactly why it keeps outselling everything else.
