Painted and stained cabinets can look equally beautiful on installation day. The real differences show up over years of daily use, and they're worth understanding before you commit.

How each holds up

Painted finishes show scratches, dings, and wear differently than stained wood — a chip in paint reveals bare substrate underneath, while a scratch in a stained door often blends into the existing grain and color variation. Darker paint colors in particular tend to show fingerprints and cleaning streaks more readily than stains do.

Touch-ups over time

Paint touch-ups are generally easier to match invisibly than stain touch-ups, since stain relies on the natural grain pattern of the specific piece of wood, which varies door to door. That said, both are repairable — it's rarely a reason to avoid either option outright.

Style and trend considerations

Painted cabinets, especially in white, gray, and increasingly bold colors, have driven most of the last decade's kitchen trends. Stained wood cabinets never went away and have come back strongly in warmer, richer tones — walnut and rift oak in particular. Neither is "more trendy" right now; they're just different directions.
