Bathroom Vanity Cabinets vs. Kitchen Cabinets: What's Different

Vanity cabinets share a lot with kitchen cabinetry, but a few construction and finish differences matter more in a bathroom than people expect.

Homeowners often assume a bathroom vanity is just a smaller kitchen cabinet, and while the brands and door styles overlap heavily, a few differences actually matter for a wet, humid room.

Moisture resistance matters more

Bathrooms see far more ambient humidity than kitchens, especially with daily showers. Look for cabinet boxes with moisture-resistant construction near the plumbing cutout, and avoid raw particleboard bottoms directly under a sink basin.

Plumbing cutouts change the layout

Vanity cabinets need a back panel cutout or false-drawer front to accommodate supply lines and drain plumbing — something a kitchen sink base also needs, but bathroom vanities more often use a shallower cabinet depth (typically 21″ versus 24″ in a kitchen), which changes which collections and door sizes are available.

Finish choices skew differently

Painted finishes dominate vanities even more than in kitchens, since a smaller room with less counter and appliance visual noise puts more attention directly on the cabinet color.

Hardware sees less daily wear, but more moisture exposure

Vanity hardware isn't handled with cooking-greasy hands the way kitchen pulls are, but it does sit closer to running water and steam — a corrosion-resistant finish matters more here than in a kitchen.

If you're planning a full bathroom remodel alongside a kitchen project, ask your designer to spec both from the same appointment — it keeps finish and hardware decisions consistent across the whole house.
